Sue’s story: Rob and I met at Sinai hospital where I was a hematology patient with stage 4 Hodgkin's disease and Rob was a 4th year medical student on a hematology rotation. It was the scariest time of my life; I was 26 years old and given a 5 year survival rate of 20-40%. Meeting and falling in love with Rob turned the worst into the best thing that had ever happened to me. He came to see me everyday. I was bowled over by Rob’s sensitivity and concern about how I was feeling emotionally; no other doctor asked! The last day before I was discharged, I was so sick from chemo and I never had a chance to thank him. When I told my stepmom (who kept saying I think that young intern likes you) she encouraged me to call him. I hesitated thinking he is only doing his job, why would he be interested in somebody with a life threatening illness? Luckily for me those were the days before privacy laws were in effect since I decided to ask my doctor for his phone number. I called Rob to say thank you and he asked me if he could call me. Rob’s story: Initially, I thought it was so sad since Sue had advanced Hodgkin’s disease. In spite of her situation, I found myself gravitating to her because she was so interesting and beautiful. I was hoping she was one of those who would beat the odds. After she left the hospital, I found myself thinking about her … there was something about her inner and outer beauty that was calling me. I was planning on calling her when I received a call from her thanking me for my help. I was so excited and asked her if we could do something together. When she said yes, I was on Cloud 9! I called her several weeks later and asked her out. Our chance meeting and Sue taking the risk to thank me led to our deep love for each other which only gets stronger every day! Now 34 years late and after two wonderful children and 5 moves, we choose to spend almost all of our time together in our Sarasota paradise. I am so lucky to have the best person in the world, my soulmate and the love of my life with me forever and always.
